51-year-old Osama Awali is jailed in lieu of a $75,000 bond after threatening to “shoot up” Wright Middle School in Nashville. Upset that the school denied his request to transfer his daughter from the school, he called the MNPS customer service line on Monday and stated that he would show up Tuesday and “punch the principal”, Sharada Deaton, and continued that he “may as well shoot up the place”. He was taken into custody Tuesday as he arrived in the student drop-off lane. Awali is charged with Communicating a threat against a school employee, a misdemeanor.

| Officers were notified by Metro Nashville School Security that the defendant had called the MNPS Customer Service line on 09/27/2021 to complain about his request to transfer his juvenile daughter from Wright Middle School being denied by school administrators. The defendant then stated that he would show up tomorrow and physically punch the Principal of Wright Middle School, Sharada Deaton. The defendant then stated to the call taker that he “may as well shoot the place up” referring to Wright Middle School. Officers responded to Wright Middle School this morning during student arrival. The defendant then arrived at Wright Middle School by vehicle where officers made contact with him in the student drop lane. Officer spoke with the defendant about this incident. The defendant admitted that he made the threat, however, claimed that he has a short temper and did not intend to shoot up the school. Officers took the defendant into physical custody due to the nature of the threat on the school as well as the defendant showing up at the school the day after making the threat |
