37-year-old Dr. Matthew S.J. Katz, of Nashville General Hospital, has been indicted on 22 counts of obtaining oxycodone by fraud, and 1 count of identity theft, after he used a fellow doctor’s identity to obtain some of the drugs.
A now unsealed grand jury indictment alleges in 2018, Katz obtained oxycodone by “misrepresentation, fraud, forgery, or subterfuge, on August 13th & 27th, and September 22nd &28th.
In 2019, he obtained oxycodone by “misrepresentation, fraud, forgery, or subterfuge, on July 5th & 15th, August 5th, 7th, 10th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 22nd, 24th, & 26th.
2019, he obtained oxycodone by “misrepresentation, fraud, forgery, or subterfuge, on April 3rd, August 2nd, 5th, 7th, 12th, 13th, 15th, 22nd, & 27th, and July, 5th & 15th.
In some of the instances, Dr. Katz used the stolen identity of another doctor, Dr. H. Erik Kostemaa MD, to obtain the narcotics.
At the time of publication, Dr. Matthew Samuel Joseph Katz was still listed as a doctor who was accepting appointments at Nashville General Hospital. The hospital nor Katz responded to any requests for comment late Friday. Katz was booked into the Metro Nashville Jail on July 1st and is free on a $50,000 bond.
