A 61-year-old homeless Black man is the first arrest made by Metro Nashville Police for violating the city’s health regulation by not wearing a mask. They say he had two in his pocket, but refused to place one on his face.
Joseph Bryant was arrested by Metro Nashville Police Officer Robert Croteau just before 8 p.m. Wednesday after police say he repeatedly violated the current public health order which requires people to wear masks when in public if they can’t otherwise social distance.

Bryant was initially given a citation just after 6:30 p.m. for not wearing a mask on Broadway. He was seen again just before 8 p.m. in the same area, once again without a mask. An officer then decided to make a physical arrest, “due to the obvious likelihood the offense would continue”. Bryant has multiple prior arrests for trespass, public intoxication, and patronizing prostitutes. He is currently held on a $500 bond.
