Woman accused of pointing gun at neighbor’s daughter because she woke her up

44-year-old Melissa Butler was charged with assault with a deadly weapon when her neighbor’s daughter woke her up banging on her door. According to the victim, Butler’s response was to point a gun at her head and ask “do you understand this?”

On May 30th around 3:00 in the morning, Metro Nashville Police were called to 1310 Massman Drive for a domestic situation. According to the affidavit, Calveasha Hawkins advised authorities that her mother lives at 1310 Massman Drive and she was trying to wake her up by banging on her door.

Agitated from being woken by the noise, Melissa Butler, who resides at 1312, came out with brandishing a handgun. Hawkins told officers that Butler pointed the gun at her head and stated “do you understand this?” Melissa Butler denied pointing the firearm at Hawkins and told them she had actually said “is this a language you understand?”

Melissa Butler was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Her bond was set at $5,000.
